McCormack: Simms will add to coaching experience
Reds: Simms on the way
25/10/2001
STEVE Simms is the man charged with helping Steve McCormack turn around the fortunes of Salford City Reds.
The former Halifax and Leigh coach, who is currently in his native Australia, has - according to club officials - already agreed to come on board following talks with chairman John Wilkinson and chief executive Dave Tarry.
Media manager Carolyn Derbyshire told Advertiser Sport: "There are no major problems to iron out. The main detail to be agreed is what Steve's role will encompass."
Simms' job title is also yet to be decided, but a 'director of rugby' position, adding his experience to the hands-on coaching of McCormack and assistant Mark Lee, looks likely.
Carolyn added that McCormack, currently on holiday, has been told his job is safe for at least another year.
"His position as head coach is no way under threat for the forseeable future," she said.
Another signing from Down Under was confirmed earlier this week, when Darren Treacy finally put pen to paper to complete his move from St George-Illawara.
The 30-year-old has been a target for McCormack since the end of Super League VI, but will be tied up with club commitments until January, so missing the start of training on November 9.
The Reds' pre-season programme is beginning to take shape, with a Boxing Day clash against Warrington on the cards.
Salford won at Wilderspool last December 26 and a return at The Willows is thought to be an attractive prospect for the festive fans.
Salford's rising stars were given a taste of - hopefully - things to come when they helped out Great Britain coach David Waite with his side's training sessions in the build-up to tomorrow's Test match against France.
The apprentices faced the likes of Andrew Farrell and Kris Radlinski at the Cleavleys centre in Winton.
