Broadbent banned after High-ham tackle

1/ 8/2001

SALFORD City Reds have confirmed that they are likely to appeal against the five match ban and fine handed to full-back Gary Broadbent.

Broadbent was involved in an incident with St Helens' hooker Mickey Higham at the end of Salford's bruising 56-18 defeat on Sunday.

He was placed on report and brought before a Superleague disciplinary committee on Tuesday where he was banned for five games and given a 500 pound fine.

In an exclusive salfordadvertiser.co.uk interview, Reds boss Steve McCormack slammed the decision. He said: "It is more than a little bit severe. It was a little bit careless fair enough, but Gary hasn't got an ounce of malice in him."

The five match ban would see Broadbent miss all but two of Salford's remaining Superleague matches, and would leave Steve McCormack with a selection headache at full-back.

It is expected that Kris Tassell or in-form winger Danny Arnold would deputise for the former Widnes man.
