Triathlon takes off for kids in Irlam

1/ 3/2001

IF AT first you DO succeed ... tri, tri and tri again - that's the message to Salford's sporting stars of the future.

More than 80 youngsters attended a junior triathlon (8-16 years) at Irlam Pool, cycling, running and swimming their way to victory.

This fast-growing sport has established itself in the city, with Salford Quays winning the honour of staging this summer's Commonwealth Games triathlon event.

Peel Hall Primary School in Little Hulton already run a successful after-school triathlon club and the Salford Junior Triathlon Club was recently set up.

Swimming sessions take place at Fit City Irlam Pool every Thursday between 6-6.45pm and a dry land session takes place every Saturday at Fit City Cadishead Sports Centre from 4.15-5.15pm.

Boys and girls aged between 8-16 are welcome. The benefits include improved health and fitness, links to Salford's Swim Scheme and Salford Athletics Club at Cleavleys Track, plus the opportunity to make new friends and take part in local and national competitions.
