BROUGHTON Ken Yu Kai Karate Club enjoyed their best medal haul this century at the Ken Yu Kai National Championships in Eccles.
They won 12 trophies in total and instructor Jack Fletcher said: "For a small club like ours to win so many medals was a fantastic achievement, which was well recognised by the association.
"It was the most medals we have won since at least the year 2000.
"And the amazing thing is that most of our karate students have been learning karate for less than a year."
Ten-year-old George Brophy proved to be Broughton’s star turn in Eccles.
He won four medals, finishing second in both the individual kumite (fighting) and the team kumite sections with eight-year-old Arcadia Seldon and seven-year-old Samuel Seldon and coming third in both the individual kata (patterned movements) and the pairs kata events with nine-year-old Louis Kelly.
Arcadia Seldon also won a bronze medal with seven-year-old Elle Piper-Johnson and 10-year-old Carly McDonald in the cadet team kata category while Samuel Seldon was third in the individual pee-wee kumite event.
Angie Kelly, aged 43, secured a third place finish in the individual open kata section.
