Third straight draw for United
2/10/2008
FOOTBALL: Beechfield United are becoming the draw kings of the Bridgewater Office Supplies’ Manchester League.
Their 1-1 home draw with third-placed Old Alts on Saturday represented their third successive stalemate and they now lie fifth in the first division table.
United were once again forced to field a much changed team but they could easily have been 5-0 up after 20 minutes of play.
They took the lead on 12 minutes when Danny Rowcroft latched on to a David Walker through ball and dispatched a curling shot past the keeper but they missed other good chances and were made to pay when Old Alts equalised on 24 minutes.
Old Alts improved from then on in as United’s impressive goalkeeper Paul Bentley was kept busy.
Midfielders Steve Erskine and Walker also shone for Beechfield while man of the match Luke Mather and Eddie Carroll were in fine form at the heart of United’s defence.
Beechfield’s reserve team produced a much improved display to win 6-4 at Stand Athletic reserves in Division Three.
The goal scorers for United, who moved up to second in the table, were man of the match Jack Tierney (4), Callum Wilkinson and James Brierley.
United’s A team came from behind to draw at home to Pennington reserves 1-1 in Division Four. Ben Charlton was their solitary scorer and defender Steven Davidson was their star performer.
Luckless Fives Athletic suffered their fifth consecutive Division One defeat, four of which have been by the odd goal.
Seventeen-year-old Danny Walker hit a brilliant consolation goal in Fives’ 2-1 loss to Manchester Juniors on Saturday.
Fives’ reserve team remained top of the fourth division following a 5-5 draw at West Didsbury and Chorlton A.
They led 4-1 at one stage only for a dismissal and injuries to pave the way for West Didsbury to come storming back.
The net finders for Fives were Ben Chaffe (3), Alex Fairclough and Dave Buffey.
Bragg and Baguley scored consolation goals in Monton Amateurs’ 4-2 first division defeat at unbeaten league leaders Dukinfield Town but Monton’s reserve side deservedly edged out Elton Vale reserves 2-1 in the second division thanks to a Phil Hay brace.
