'Superman' flies in world finals

WORSLEY-BASED Matt Clarke enjoyed the biggest pay day of his darts career in reaching the quarter-finals of the PDC World Matchplay – and he is determined to build on the success.

Clarke, who is nicknamed ‘Superman’ or ‘Clarke of Kent’ on the back of the fact that he was born in Dartford, took away a hefty prize purse of £12,000 after losing out to reigning champion and world number three James Wade 16-12 in the televised stages in Blackpool.

The 41-year-old was proud of his showing and is keen to return to the big matches very soon.

He said: "It’s been a long time coming but I think I deserved it. This takes me to the edge of the top 32 and, hopefully, I can kick on from here. I had darts at a double to go 8-7 up (against Wade) but I missed the chance. I think I would have won the match had that gone in but I am delighted with my form."

Clarke knocked out two members of the world’s top ten players in earlier rounds – Roland ‘The Tripod’ Scholten and Peter ‘One Dart’ Manley.
