Narrow cup final defeat for Eccles

8/ 5/2008

RU: ECCLES' season ended on a sour note as they suffered an 11-6 defeat to Heaton Moor in the Lancashire Plate final.

It was a case of history repeating itself as Heaton Moor had also recorded two narrow wins against Eccles in the league.

Eccles played reasonably well in the final in Preston. They knocked over two penalties via Danny Nicholls and they could have snatched a last minute win when man of the match Stuart Grieves narrowly failed to collect Howarth’s poor pass. But the problems that Eccles have experienced all season again came back to haunt them.

Too many penalties were conceded and this cost Eccles field position, possession and any hope of building pressure.

A lack of composure and an inability to take try scoring opportunities also hindered Eccles’ victory hopes.

But there were more positives to be taken from the game than negatives.

Looking ahead to next season, Eccles clearly have plenty of strength in depth in their 22-man squad. They showed aggressive defence and dominated up front in the cup final and they had some superb individual performers in front of their fantastic supporters, most notably Kieran Russell and Grieves.
