National aim

29/ 3/2007

ON-LOAN hooker David Berthezene has vowed to continue to shine for Salford City Reds and cement his place in the French national team.

The 26-year-old has been brought in from Catalan Dragons as short term cover for injured skipper Malc Alker and he made an impressive debut in Sunday's much needed 18-16 win at Huddersfield.

Berthezene is motivated by the fear of losing his international shirt having made just one substitute appearance for the Dragons this season. And he is dreaming of gaining a permanent deal with the Reds as he seems to be surplus to requirements at Catalan.

There is scope for that as Alker is the only senior hooker in Salford's 26-man squad.

Berthezene, who is playing his club rugby out of France for the first time, said: "I wasn't playing for Catalan so I was very happy and excited to accept the challenge when Salford came knocking on the door.

"By replacing Malc Alker I know I've got big boots to fill. There is no one else like him in Super League. But I'm going to be giving my best to Salford and I hope the coaches will be happy with me.

"I have signed for a month but I would like to stay longer than that. I will have to do well for that to happen and that is what I intend to do."

The Reds have some big games coming up and Berthezene is no stranger to high pressure matches.

He has represented his country against every major international team in world rugby, including Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain. And he is determined to represent France in the 2008 World Cup.

Berthezene, who is a strong tackler and accurate distributor, said: "I am confident in my ability but it was not good for me mentally not getting games for Catalan.

"Playing for France is very important to me and you need to be doing your best for your club to be selected for your country.

"So I needed to get out of Catalan and show everyone who I am and what I can do."
