Simms: We can better fifth!

SALFORD City Reds were given plenty of plaudits for finishing fifth in the Super League table - and they will be aiming even higher next season.

The Reds are convinced that the new signings of Michael Korkidas, Luke Dorn, Mark Edmondson, Stephen Nash, Lee Jewitt and Danny Halliwell will continue the club's gradual progression.

So the message to Super League giants like St Helens, Leeds, Bradford and Hull is 'watch your back'.

Steve Simms, Salford's director of football, said: "Maybe we can finish even higher next season.

"There were eight or nine games that we lost by just a few points last season. If we'd actually gone and won half of them then we could have been pushing for the top three.

"We are still a young squad with plenty of potential.

"We have signed the likes of Korkidas, Dorn, Edmondson and Nash and we should have a better team next season.

"It has happened in the past whereby teams finish in the play-offs one season and then fight against relegation the next. That won't happen to us.

"The players we have brought in will improve us and the players we have will have another year of experience behind them.

"We have done well this season and it was just a shame that we went out of the play-offs like we did. But we can learn a lot from the play-off defeat at Bradford and I'm sure we will."
