Willie snubs McRae

WILLIE Talau has joined fellow St Helens centre Steven Tyrer in turning down a move to Salford City Reds.

And Reds coach Shaun McRae is hoping that North Queensland Cowboys centre Mark Henry does not follow suit.

McRae said: "We are mainly looking to recruit outside backs now.

"Willie Talau has indicated that he won’t be coming here. I don’t know where he’s going I just know that he’s not coming to Salford.

"Steven Tyrer has also indicated to me that he is going elsewhere.

"St Helens are offering Steven out on loan for 12 months and I thought that bringing him to Salford would be a good deal for all parties concerned. But it was not to be so we move on.

"We are trying to find out if Mark Henry can get out of his contract at North Queensland. He is a very good player and he may have a clause in his contract which would allow him to leave for a Super League club.

"The move for him may or may not come off. He has been non-committal so far in terms of whether or not he wants to come here."

Henry is highly rated in Australia and, at the age of 27, he would represent a wiser investment than 32-year-old Kiwi Talau, who has been widely linked with Salford ever since they were granted a three-year Super League licence last month.

Salford’s director of football Steve Simms is also speaking to the agents of other NRL centres. But McRae says that the Reds are only looking to make ‘three or four’ more new signings for next season and he insists that the passing of Super League’s anti-tampering deadline on Monday, September 1, will have little impact on the club.

"We haven’t got any players lined up for the passing of the deadline," McRae said. "And we may well look to bring in just one or two English-based players and sign two Australian-based players to fill up our overseas quota."

Meanwhile, McRae is confident that young second rower Luke Adamson will soon sign the contract extension he has been offered.

At 32, Talau is not what is needed at Salford. We need a couple of centres in their mid twenties who mhave a proven track record..A quality wing would also be a blessing . jim shelton
