Lifting trophy was memorable moment

21/ 8/2008

MALCOLM ALKER COLUMN: "AS captain to lift the team’s second piece of silverware of the season on Sunday, was another very special and memorable day for me personally.

Most players don’t get the chance to pick up the honours on behalf of their team, club and supporters and I feel very privileged to be captain at the Reds.

It makes all the hard work, graft and pain worthwhile and the lads have now got their sights set on making it a cup treble with a Grand Final on the horizon.

You can be assured we won’t be taking our foot off the gas though, as there is still plenty of rugby to be played and tonnes of work for us to get through.

It’s a long trip down to deepest Wales for our last match of the regular season with Celtic Crusaders, who will again be no easy beats on their home turf.

But as always you can be sure that myself and the lads will give one hundred percent effort.

Sunday was a big day for Luke Ambler as he made his first team debut and did himself proud with some excellent running and tackling, I for one wish him all the best for the future.

In between training I have been keeping a keen eye on the Olympics and Team GB have done the nation proud with a magnificent 16 gold medals and counting. For Salford based Chris Hoy to take three golds in one Olympics is outstanding.

Maybe we should get him down to the club, the last time we went cycling I managed to get my team well and truly lost after setting off mountain biking in Wales, but that’s another story.

Things seem to be bubbling along nicely off the field with the latest signing of Luke Swain from Gold Coast Titans, who I am sure will be a tremendous asset to the squad.

I hope as many of you as possible can support Paul Highton’s testimonial golf day at Boysnope Golf course at Irlam in early September, Paul deserves all the support you can give after his 10 years at the club. I know from personal experience how difficult it is to organise all these different events during a testimonial year, so give it your best shot.

Hope to see many of you at Celtic Crusaders on Saturday as the Red Army takes to the road again, myself and the players really do appreciate all your fantastic support."
