Robbie and Malc to share hooking

14/ 8/2008

SALFORD City Reds intend to alternate Robbie Paul and Malc Alker in the hooking role next season having recruited a top class half back in New Zealand international Jeremy Smith.

Bradford Bulls legend Paul has been used in the halves this season while Alker has proven once again his prowess as an 80-minute hooker.

But with Paul and Alker both coming towards the end of their careers and with the hooking role one of the most important and physically demanding jobs in rugby league head coach Shaun McRae has decided to make changes.

McRae experimented with Alker and Paul sharing hooking duties in Friday’s home win against Dewsbury Rams.

And he said: "Robbie Paul will play a different role next season. And if you saw the Dewsbury game you will know what that role is."

McRae added: "Hooking is one of the hardest jobs in the modern game in terms of energy levels."

The Salford coach knows that Alker can fulfil a variety of roles in the pack when Paul comes off the bench to provide bursts of energy from dummy half.
