We will Ram home our advantage

7/ 8/2008

MALCOLM ALKER COLUMN: "WE are now just one win away from securing the league leaders’ shield – and I have every confidence that we will get that win at home to Dewsbury Rams this Friday.

After all, Dewsbury are bottom of the National League One table and we beat them 70-22 on their own patch last month. But I am by no means thinking that the three points are a certainty. Nothing is certain in professional sport. Shock results happen every single week and the only way to avoid falling victim to one yourself is to perform out on the pitch.

That is precisely what we intend to do on Friday. If we play anywhere near to the best of our ability then victory and the league leaders’ shield will be ours. And that is a big motivation for us this week. It is great looking at the table and seeing us seven points clear of the pack.

We earned that gap with a really good performance at Halifax on Thursday night. They are a good team but we handled everything that they threw at us. And, with them being the closest side to us in the table, we are now more confident than ever of winning this year’s League One title.

We have beaten all of our League One rivals this season so we have nothing to worry about in the play-offs apart from our own performances. And I for one can’t wait for the play-offs to begin. I am in good form individually and the team are playing well too. And I am determined to enjoy the end of the season as, with us heading back up to Super League next year, this could turn out to be my last genuine chance to challenge for a league title.

Youngsters like Adam Sidlow and Stefan Ratchford, on the other hand, have lots of trophy challenges to look forward to I’m sure. Both players have signed new contracts with the club this week and I am chuffed with that. They are two of the best young talents that I have seen in my 11-year stint at Salford. They have got everything that you need to be a successful player in their respective positions.

Adam is one of the biggest 20-year-olds in the history of mankind and he can play a bit too. And Stefan is a real bag of tricks. He showed what a class act he is with a stunning 70-metre interception try against Halifax.

But it wasn’t as good as my lung-busting run which stopped Halifax from scoring a try on the break. Everyone has been asking me about that this week. I showed real pace apparently. So if I ever get tired of taking on the forwards down the middle maybe I should have a crack at playing with the speed merchants out on the wing!"

Salford are going to the SL next year thru legislation; let's show the doubters that we would have gone up by merit in any case. The Reds should attempt to end the season on a high note. Jim Shelton
