Licence joy for Salford

SALFORD City Reds fans are celebrating after their club were granted one of the 14 Super League licences up for grabs for the 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons.

The groundbreaking new system, which will see National League One leaders Salford and Welsh club Celtic Crusaders join the 12 current Super League clubs in the top flight, signals the end of promotion and relegation in the European game.

The Rugby Football League announced the new make-up of an expanded Super League at 10am on Tuesday morning.

Nineteen clubs had applied for a licence and those to miss out were French club Toulouse along with Leigh, Halifax and Featherstone from the National League.

Richard Lewis, the RFL's executive chairman, said: "It was a difficult decision. There were 19 good applications but in the end there are going to be five disappointed clubs."

Salford responded to the big news by releasing an official club statement, which read: "Salford City Reds are delighted to be back in engage Super League.

"The club had every confidence in its licence application, which was a comprehensive review of all aspects of club operations. The granting of a licence based on those documents is testimony that the game's governing body approves of the professional manner in which Salford City Reds currently operates on and off the field.

"We would like to take the opportunity to thank the Executive Directors at the RFL for their decision, which secures the future ambitions of Salford City Reds for the 2009 season and beyond."

A five-man RFL panel assessed the 19 applications based on four key criteria - stadium facilities, finance and business performance, commercial and marketing plus playing strength, including junior player production development.

Congratulations Reds! Fantastic and well done!

Harry, Salford's future should not just be restricted to the City of Salford boundaries, but to the wider Manchester public of over 2.5 million!
