Happy to have rewarded loyal fans

10/ 7/2008

MALCOLM ALKER COLUMN: I WILL take a lot of happy memories from Sunday’s cup final win in Blackpool – and the sight of so many Salford fans smiling at the end of the game is undoubtedly the pick of them.

As captain of the side, I am really proud of the way that we performed. The team deserved that cup after putting in plenty of hard work out on the training pitch and then rising to the big occasion.

But our fans deserved it even more. We let them down last season by getting ourselves relegated from Super League. But they stuck by us and the players owed them one for that. So it was great to give them a cup final to enjoy on Sunday. And the fact that we played so well to set a new record cup final win was the icing on the cake.

It was brilliant to see so many of our fans cheering us on in Blackpool. They created a superb atmosphere and lifting that cup up at the end of the match was one of the highlights of my long career. We celebrated the win well into the early hours in a party back at the Willows.

I have to confess to having one too many beers and Dewsbury will certainly be hoping that my teammates and I are suffering from a cup final hangover when we meet in a league game at their place on Sunday. They have a new coach in my former Salford teammate Warren Jowitt. And although they have only won one game in the league all season they have lost a lot of matches by narrow margins and I expect them to give us a tough test.

But we have spoken about making our cup win a springboard to a strong end to our league campaign. We may be top of the League One table but our performances have not been up to scratch at times this season. We want a big improvement in the business end of the season and we are hoping that the confidence gained from our cup final win will prove to be our trump card on that score.

I am confident that we can build up some momentum and complete a league and cup double. And as things stand going into the Super League licensing decision on Tuesday, July 22, there is no doubt in my mind that us Salford players deserve a top flight franchise.

I can’t speak on off the field matters as it is not my place to. But on the field we have done all that we could have done so far this year. We have certainly done more than the likes of Widnes and Celtic, who are supposedly the main threats to our licence hopes.

We can only hope that the RFL do not become ensnared with geographical and political issues and appoint Salford and Widnes as new entrants in the Super league. These 2 clubs stand out like sore thumbs in their readiness and ability to sustain a "Super" franchise. Jim Shelton
