On to a winner with Myler and Paul

1/ 5/2008

MALCOLM ALKER COLUMN: THE headlines were all about Richard Myler after our victory over Whitehaven – and understandably so. It is no mean feat to score a hat-trick of tries against a side as well drilled as Whitehaven.

But it was his improving half back combination with Robbie Paul that pleased me most about the game. The half back area is so important in rugby league. And when you put two players together in the halves it is very much hit and miss as to whether or not they will gel well as a pairing.

Richard and Robbie have only played a few games together due to Robbie having to undergo a back operation at the start of the season. But there were definite signs against Whitehaven that we are on to a winner with those two directing the play in the middle of the park. They looked like they had been playing together for years at times.

And fellow half back Stefan Ratchford slotted in to the side really well from the substitutes’ bench as well. I can see the half back area being a major plus point for us between now and the end of the season.

And it is great to see Robbie starting to get back to his best. He is gradually returning to full fitness and showing what a class act he is. Youngsters Richard and Stefan couldn’t ask for a better teacher as they look to develop their games. I can see Robbie moulding them so that they play the game in a similar style to himself.

Our next game is away at Sheffield on Friday. They are clearly one of the better sides in League One having won three of their first five games. I don’t know a lot about them. But we have seen clips of them when preparing to play other teams and, from those, I have to say that they look very good with the ball-in-hand.

I’m expecting it to be a tough game for us. But if we play to our full potential there is not a side in this division that can beat us.

And we are full of confidence after putting in a good performance against Whitehaven on Thursday. Whitehaven are a difficult side to play against. They do the basics well and try to grind you down. But we were by far the superior side, despite Whitehaven playing well on the night.

Our defence looked strong and we scored some excellent tries to cap off a really good response to our Challenge Cup defeat to Wakefield four days earlier.
