Wakefield will feel our backlash
17/ 4/2008
MALCOLM ALKER COLUMN: THE draw with Widnes on Friday felt like a defeat to me personally, such was the disappointment.
We just weren’t at the ball game from the off and wasted too much energy hanging into the game as Widnes came out really pumped up.
Shaun McRae got stuck into us after the game and had a few words to say and rightly so. I thought we just didn’t perform.
It’s the biggest test we’ve had so far and we didn’t respond to it, which isn’t good.
I think our forwards have been excellent all season but they were under great pressure on Friday and it told on us.
Widnes are the best side we’ve faced so far and they asked a lot of questions. We didn’t give a true account of ourselves and weren’t prepared mentally for the start of the game. I can’t put my finger on why, but it’s something that can’t happen again.
I don’t think we were conditioned to a tight game as many of the others have been won with good margins so far this season.
I felt I had too much defending to do because we didn’t use the ball well or get enough of it.
That being said, I think the game has come at the right time for us as regards the next match.
Wakefield in the Challenge Cup is one we’ve been looking forward to.
It gives us a chance to bounce back straight away and because we had a tough test on Friday we are more prepared for another battle on Sunday.
I think we’ve got to be mentally right and if we are I think we’ve got a great chance of causing an upset.
We’ll be going into the game looking to give them a bit of a backlash.
Our forwards have been stinging in training all week and want to get back out on the park to put things right.
Wakefield have had a few injury worries, but they had an impressive result against Huddersfield and will be on a bit of a high coming into the match.
But we’ll be up for it too and you never know what can happen in the Challenge Cup.
We’d love to have a good run and I think we’ve got a squad in place who can do that. Bring on Sunday!
Should less emphasis be placed on the results of tests and more emphasis on general education for children?
