Myler's better!

SALFORD City Reds coach Shaun McRae is backing teen sensation Richard Myler to shine against his former club.

Half back Myler faces his biggest test yet as he takes on his ex-Widnes team mates at The Willows tomorrow night (Friday), fresh from being named National League One’s player of the month.

The 17-year-old half back has excelled this season and McRae says he won’t be daunted by the occasion.

"He’s a fine player and still so young - he’s just a baby in rugby terms," said McRae.

"It will be a big test against his former club and there will be some pressure there as always when players take on ex-colleagues, but he is more than ready for it.

"He has nothing to prove against Widnes - it was Richard who made the decision to leave, not the other way around.

"He’s been in fine form recently so hopefully he can carry that on.

"He can only get better too, as he still has a lot of maturing and developing to do."

Widnes coach and former Red, Steve McCormack gave Myler his first team chance.

He said: "He has all the attributes to be a top player.

"I gave him his debut last season and he waited to see how things would develop at Widnes, but decided to move on. He can have a very big future in the game."

McRae says he is expecting a tougher test against the only other team to have won all their National League One games.

Despite both sides having 100 per cent records Reds are clear at the top as Widnes had points deducted for financial irregularities.

McRae added: "We are expecting a stern test on Friday, as Widnes have quality right through their team with a number of former Super League players in the squad.

"I wasn’t impressed with our performance against Bramley.

"We gave over too much football and against a better side we’d have been punished.

"We’ll have to be at our best against probably the best opposition we’ll face this season."

The Reds are hoping to welcome back Karl Fitzpatrick, who will face a fitness check today (Thursday). Other than that, they have a clean bill of health.

McRae said: "We pencilled this in as the game Karl would come back and that will give us a big boost. But first he has to get through the fitness test."

Robbie Paul came through his debut unscathed and is expected to partner Myler in the half backs.

McRae added: "Robbie made a solid debut and was just feeling his way in.

"The most important thing was to get 80 minutes from him and we achieved that. His quality will shine through as the season goes on."

Two quality teams playing should guarantee an ezciting match. Fitzy and Paul in the backfield should bring out the best in young Myler. it is to be hoped that the contest will attract a swarm of fans. Jim Shelton, Toronto
