Roosters replace iconic goal posts

4/ 9/2008

NEW posts have gone up at Eccles and Salford Juniors following the well publicised vandalism of their original timber posts.

And Eccles will use the new posts for the first time when they host Waterhead in the National Conference League on Saturday, September 20.

Before then, the Roosters will visit Hull Isberg on Saturday, September 6.

A small team of players and club officials worked for eight hours to erect the new posts on Saturday, missing the Challenge Cup final between St Helens and Hull FC as a result.

Salford-based Urban Vision helped to obtain the posts, which are a whopping 16.6 metres tall and are as close as the club could get to the historic original set.

The original posts were donated by Swinton Lions when their Station Road ground was closed in 1992. They were rumoured to be the tallest posts in rugby league.

Meanwhile, Eccles’ under-14s side suffered a 34-6 defeat to higher league Ashton Bears in a pre-season friendly.

Eccles did not deserve to lose by that scoreline but they could at least take consolation from Dion Rothwell scoring a try and kicking a conversion on his debut.
