Swinton's worst-ever injury crisis

1/ 5/2008

SWINTON Lions coach Paul Kidd is desperately searching both the professional and amateur scene for potential loan signings amid ‘the worst injury crisis’ he has ever known.

Full back Wayne English (broken jaw), centre Dean Gorton (broken wrist and thumb), second rower Neil Rigby (shoulder) and props Rob Ball (dead leg) and Rob Line (sternum) all joined Swinton’s ever growing injury list following a bruising battle at Workington on Sunday.

As a result, Swinton could have up to 11 players unavailable for their mid-table clash at home to Gateshead Thunder on Bank Holiday Monday, May 5, kick-off 3pm.

Richard Hawkyard (ankle), Darren Gibson (hip), Andy Saywell (knee), Darren Bamford (ankle), Liam McGovern (broken arm) and Chris Morley (knee) are Swinton’s other injured players.

Kidd, whose team play their home games at Sedgley Park, said: "I’ve never known anything like it. The Gods seem to be against me at the moment.

"As things stand, we are struggling to put a side together for the Gateshead game. But I am hoping to bring in a loan signing or two this week. I have rung a lot of Super League and National League coaches and I am also exploring the amateur scene too.

"Unfortunately, lots of professional clubs are suffering from injury problems so I’ve been hitting a lot of brick walls."

Prop Adam Bibey will return from suspension on Bank Holiday Monday while Kidd says that injured quartet Hawkyard, Gibson, Line and Ball all have a chance of being passed fit for the game.

But Bamford is definitely ruled out of the clash, leaving the Lions without a recognised full back.

Kidd said: "If I can’t bring anyone in I will have to move Chris Hull there.

"Wayne English was doing well at full back but he needs an operation and will be out of action for up to 10 weeks. Dean Gorton, who had been going from strength to strength for us, also broke bones at the weekend. He will probably be out for four to five weeks.

"Those two leave big holes to fill."

Swinton and Gateshead both have 10 points on the board. And Kidd is expecting a difficult game on Bank Holiday Monday.

He said: "Gateshead are going really well. They are among the strongest teams in League Two. They have got real pace in the backs and they are very well organised. It will be a stern test, particularly with our injury problems, and it is up to us to rise to the challenge."
