HOOKER Phil Wood was the inspiration behind Swinton’s win at Workington. He scored the opening try and made a mammoth 47 tackles during the course of the League Two game.

AN INJURY-hit Swinton Lions side moved up to sixth spot in the National League Two table with their first win on Cumbrian soil since the Grand Final season of 2006.
The Lions always find it tough at Derwent Park. Their dreadful record there suggests that Swinton are jinxed at the home of Workington Town.
So the last thing they needed was to go into Sunday’s game missing several players through injury. And their task was made doubly difficult by Wayne English, Neil Rigby and Dean Gorton all picking up injuries during the course of the match.
Swinton knew that they had to work their socks off in order to record their first away league win of the season.
They certainly did that. But their fans also owe a big thank you to the wizardry of hooker Phil Wood, the big plays of winger Marlon Billy and the feverish workrate of second rower Bruce Johnson.
Wood was particularly influential as Swinton pretty much controlled the game from start to finish. He gave them a fifth minute lead by charging down Lions reject Jay Duffy’s kick and racing 60 metres to the try line.
Town hit back when Carl Forber sent Franco Kmet over.
Two Forber penalties put Workington 10-6 ahead but Swinton led at the half-time break with Wood’s stunning 70-metre run paving the way for Chris Brand to touch down.
Swinton ran away with the spoils in the second half with Gary Hulse’ clever chips setting up tries for Billy and Gorton.
Barry Hamilton also crossed for Swinton following a precise long pass from Chris Hull while tries by Ryan Blair and Kmet gave Town a losing bonus point.
Brand knocked over five of his six attempts at goal while Hulse and Forber were sin-binned following a 68th minute half back scrap.
Team: English; Hamilton, Brand, Gorton, Billy; Hull, Hulse; Line, Wood, Hayes, Johnson, Rigby, Sykes. Subs used: Ashall, Moana, Tyrer, Ball. Tries: Wood, Brand, Billy, Gorton, Hamilton. Goals: Brand (5). Attendance: 644.
Should less emphasis be placed on the results of tests and more emphasis on general education for children?
