Folly hail new 'Czech mates'

17/ 4/2008

FOLLY Lane under-18s rugby league squad enjoyed a winning visit to Prague at the weekend.

The 18-strong squad beat Czech Republic side Beroun Black Panthers 60-6 in a friendly fixture aimed at promoting the sport in one of rugby’s developing nations.

The club jumped at the opportunity to get involved with their counterparts from Beroun, situated 30 miles west of Prague itself.

The dream trip became a reality after the lads raised funds through sponsorship and name cards.

Head coach Tony Griffin said: "This was a great opportunity for the team to finish the year on a high, particularly as the bulk of the team has come through the ranks at Folly Lane and have been together for more than eight years in some cases.

"It is also great for this club to be involved in helping the Czech rugby league authorities to develop the game in a country that already has a massive following for football and rugby union.

"It was a cracking game and although the scoreline suggests otherwise the Panthers put up a real battle.

"They had all the right physical attributes, but just lacked the experience as it was the first time they’d played together in a proper game.

"They kept coming at us and refused to give up right until the end, so we were very pleased with the win. The trip was a big success and we’ve already talked about taking more teams over there and getting their lads over here to keep the link going.

"They really looked after us and our lads enjoyed the experience - especially when they got to relax in Prague after the game!"

The Folly tries were scored by man of the match Dave Finlay (3), Rory Hicks (2), James Tennant (2), Ben Burrows, Luke Walmesley and Martin Williamson.

Three long serving members of the squad who missed the tour were Jack Spencer, Rory Dahouchi and Mark Arrowsmith, who were all representing Salford in Alan Hunte’s junior squad.
