PENDLETON College students have proved they’re gluttons for punishment after qualifying as rugby league referees.
Fifteen members of the college’s rugby league academy are now qualified to referee games at 13-a-side after undertaking a six week course.
The course included practical and theoretical elements and even saw the students refereeing small sided games at local primary schools.
Those who passed the assessments can now earn around £30 a game by officiating matches in the area.
Sam Pitt, a student at the academy, said: "The course is very well structured, giving me the confidence to further my knowledge in the refereeing profession.
"I would love to make it as a rugby league player, but if this doesn’t happen I will have the qualifications needed to become a referee instead, which is great."
Super League referee Ian Smith added: "The course is a fantastic way to get new referees into the sport.
"Hopefully some of these young refs will be able to go forward and forge professional careers as rugby league officials."
