Lions sign Bamford, Gibson and Morley

13/12/2007

SWINTON Lions have signed three players on one-year deals to take their squad number for next season to 26.

They have snapped up 21-year-olds Darren Bamford and Darren Gibson from Salford City Reds’ Academy set-up.

And they have retained the services of 32-year-old Welsh international forward Chris Morley.

Head coach Paul Kidd: “I am really pleased with the three signings this week and I am hoping to have two more signings to report soon. I am chasing two talented young players who were playing at Academy level last season.

“Darren Bamford and Darren Gibson both fall into that category too.

“They come highly recommended from Scott Naylor at Salford and they deserve the chance to prove themselves at first team level.

“Bamford is a back looking to rebuild his career after suffering from pneumonia last season. The year before that he was playing in the first team at Salford which speaks volumes for his potential.

“Gibson is a back row forward who is not the biggest but he is very strong and very tough.

“And the final player we have signed up this week is Chris Morley. He has always done well for us and it’s great that he’s staying put as we have a lot of young players in the squad and, with his experience, he will be ideal in terms of nurturing the young talent here and helping to bring the young players on.”

Kidd is excited by the potential of his 2008 squad but he admits that a strong start to the season is unlikely.

He said: “We have a very young squad and the young players need time to develop. But the talent is definitely there and we should get better as the season progresses.”

  • Former Swinton player Lee Marsh has been handed a six-game ban for biting an Oldham player while playing for the Lions last year.

  • Kidd wants it to been known that Swinton and all other National League clubs will not pick up £100,000 per year from a new television deal with BSkyB until the year 2009.

What on Earth is going on at Swinton Lions? The club who were ripped up and destroyed way back in 1992 have now finally cut all ties with the town and are now signing players nobody else wants. Looks like that idiot Kidd is on a one man mission to finish it off completley. Many of the few remaining supporters feel the club will be no more by next christmas, if it was a dog you would of put it down years ago.
