Flixton heap more misery on wasteful City

FOOTBALL: Salford City 0 Flixton 1 - SALFORD paid the price for scorning a series of scoring opportunities as they lost to near neighbours Flixton for the second time in seven days.

Following their exit from the FA Cup against the same opposition the previous weekend, City were looking to turn the tables in Saturday's Vodkat sponsored North West Counties League first division encounter.

Despite starting the game without the injured Tunji Moses and Kenny Tudor, promotion chasing Salford made a bright start against fellow high-flyers Flixton and they were unlucky to see a Carl Lomax shot cleared off the line on 10 minutes.

Minutes later, a low free kick from Jamie Baguley went narrowly wide of the post before another Baguley effort swerved away from the goal at the last second with keeper David Rouse beaten.

Rouse had to be on top form before the break to turn away a smart drive from Tommy Turner.

He went on to make several more saves in what was a frustrating afternoon for Salford.

Rouse thwarted Turner again after the break and he also got his body in the way of a powerful Jon Robinson header.

Lomax squandered a great chance by shooting far too early when well clear of the Flixton defence.

And Salford's misery was compounded when Chris Downey pinched the points for Flixton, firing a low cross into the six yard box through a ruck of players.

Salford were playing away at Silsden as the Advertiser went to press last night, Wednesday, September 12.

Their next game is at Congleton on Saturday, September 15, kick-off 3pm.

Meanwhile, City's youth team won again at the weekend when they defeated Leigh RMI with a solitary goal.
