A fine response

SALFORD City have made an encouraging start to life without Gary Fellows.

In their first games since Fellows was sacked as manager, rock bottom City recorded a creditable 1-1 draw at mid-table Colwyn Bay in the UniBond League First Division North on Tuesday and won 2-0 at home to Gresley Rovers in the FA Carlsberg Trophy preliminary round three days earlier.

With Wayne Goodison in temporary charge of the team, City’s form certainly improved in the two fixtures.

They took the lead at Colwyn Bay with a stunning 14th minute goal by Steve Brackenridge. He latched on to a quality cross from the right and volleyed the ball home.

The home side equalised 20 minutes later as Salford were punished for opting against putting the ball out for a corner.

The first half was an even affair but Salford dominated after the break only to be thwarted by some excellent defending. Wes Bancroft missed two good chances for Salford in the final 10 minutes after entering the fray from the substitutes’ bench.

Despite their lowly league position, Salford have been performing well in the cup competitions this season. And City certainly rose to the occasion in what was their first ever appearance in the FA Carlsberg Trophy on Saturday.

The first half was a drab affair but City looked a much more potent attacking force after the interval and they took the lead on the hour-mark mark. There was a touch of comedy about Mattie Kay’s goal as his header bobbed on the goal line, hit an upright and ended up going in the net off a defender’s head.

After missing some great chances against UniBond First Division South’s Gresley, Salford finally secured victory when Bancroft sped to the byline late on and pulled the ball back for Dion Depeiaza to score at the near post.

City go to Stourbridge in the next round on Saturday, October 18. This Saturday, October 11, kick-off 3pm, Salford visit Radcliffe Borough in the league and they then visit Woodley Sports in a UniBond President’s Cup clash on Tuesday, October 14, kick-off 7.45pm.
