Drab draw

BEECHFIELD United produced another below-par display at the weekend as they drew 1-1 at Stand Athletic.

The result left United lying sixth in the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester Football League first division.

Beechfield had several players unavailable on Saturday for various reasons and they struggled throughout.

But, thanks to their makeshift defence which included man of the match Karl Henshaw and some fine saves by keeper Paul Bentley, United hung on to Stand’s coat tails and they took the lead against the run of play when John Cardall powerfully headed in Anthony Weall’s corner kick on 49 minutes.

Despite being reduced to nine men, Stand equalised on 75 minutes. And Weall and Cardall both wasted golden late opportunities to win the game for Beechfield.

Fives Athletic are still searching for their first points of the season after losing 2-1 at Heywood St James. Fives dominated most of the game despite being under strength but all that they had to show for their efforts was a Rob Monaghan penalty.

Monton Amateurs triumphed 2-0 at Whitworth Valley thanks to goals by Ross Harford and Shaun Gordon but they should have won the game even more comfortably.

Monton’s second team conceded three goals in the first 15 minutes on their way to losing to Dukinfield Town 4-1 in Division Two. Andy Barlow scored a second half consolation goal from the penalty spot.

Beechfield’s reserve side were fortunate to beat Stand Athletic reserves 4-2 in a Division Three game which included two red card incidents.

A draw would have been a fairer result but Beechfield benefited from good finishing with Stephen Evans, James Brierley (2) and Tim Taylor claiming their goals.

Beechfield’s third team lost their derby battle with Salford Victoria 6-1 in Division Four.

Five’s reserve team continued their impressive start to the season by defeating Wilmslow Albion reserves 3-1.

Their men on the mark were Alex Fairclough, Thomas and Mark Little.
