SALFORD City will remember their first ever visit to the home of former Football League club Halifax Town for all the wrong reasons.

The visitors never got going in the red-hot sunshine and, on a superb playing surface at The Shay, the home side won Saturday’s game at a canter to rise up to 11th spot in the UniBond League First Division North table and leave Salford rock bottom.

City found themselves under pressure straight from the kick-off and atrocious defending let Halifax romp into a two-goal lead with just two minutes on the clock via goals from Kris King and Paul Gedman.

Ashley Scott’s delightful chip over the keeper from 22 yards out then gave Town a third goal.

Salford were struggling to contain the Shaymen down the home side’s right flank and, with Town looking better organised and being quicker to every ball, the fight seemed to drain out of City.

Gedman’s second goal of the game had a suspicion of off-side about it but there was no doubt about Lincoln Adams’ headed goal from a free kick.

The second half started in disastrous manner for Salford. Just two minutes in, Damien Billingham was caught in possession deep inside his own half and Stott netted.

With Halifax easing up, City began to have more of the ball and they were rewarded when Reece Kelly hit a late consolation goal. But Town’s ex-League player Nigel Jemson completed the rout with a last minute goal.

City visit Prescot Cables in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup on Saturday, September 27, kick-off 7.45pm.
