Monton triumph in Hindsford final

MONTON Amateurs overcame a spirited Fives Athletic side 4-0 on Monday night to lift the Hindsford Cup for the first time.
And they will be hoping to complete a cup double when they take on West Didsbury in the Murray Trophy final at Manchester City’s Platt Lane complex tomorrow, Friday, May 23, kick-off 7.30pm.
Monton started Monday night’s game at Hindsford’s Squires Lane ground as strong favourites having finished the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester Football League first division season in second spot.
Fives finished second from bottom and they found themselves two goals adrift at the half-time break.
Both sides had chances but, while Monton netted with a delightful George Switzer lob and a goal from workhorse Tommy Walsh, Fives were guilty of turning down shooting opportunities and trying to pass the ball into the net.
Monton were more dominant after the interval and, after several missed chances, veteran Paul Varley cemented their victory with a brace of goals.
Fives reached the final with a 2-0 semi-final success against a strong Howbridge team with Luke Hodson and Keir Jones scoring the second half goals.
Monton beat Ashton Athletic on penalties in their semi-final.
