Celtic's cup

8/ 5/2008

SALFORD Celtic continued their rapid rise to prominence in the Eccles Sunday Football League on Friday night by winning the Margaret Piggott Memorial Cup final.

Premier Division side Salford Celtic, who were playing in the fifth division when they first joined the league five years ago, came from 2-1 behind to defeat second division champions De La Salle Coruna 3-2 in the final at Salford City’s Moor Lane ground.

They are also battling to finish runners-up to Premier Division champions elect Irlam FC having won the first division title and the TJ Judge Cup last season.

Salford Celtic took the lead on Friday night via two-goal hero Damien Busuttil but a Danny Tennant penalty and a Danny Doherty strike turned the tide in Coruna’s favour.

Ryan Hutchinson bagged an equaliser for Salford Celtic after coming on as a second half substitute before Busuttil hit the winner from Nick Horton’s cross with just five minutes left on the clock.

In the Carr and Hulme Trophy, the shocks continued with fourth division sides Mark United and Ordsall winning at higher league Barton Town and Tophouse Rangers 4-2 and 4-0 respectively to move into the quarter-finals.

The quarter-finals were being played as the Advertiser went to press last night, Wednesday, May 7.

The semi-finals will be held on Sunday, May 11, kick-offs 11am.

And the final will be played at Monton Amateurs’ Granary Lane ground on Wednesday night, May 14, kick-off by 6.30pm.

Meanwhile, Irlam returned to winning ways in the league’s Premier Division on Sunday by thumping Tiger Moth 5-0 at home while Salford Celtic’s 3-1 victory over Clifton closed the gap in the runners-up chase.
