DESPITE hitting the back of the net with two quality goals Salford failed to pick up the three points needed to clinch runners-up spot in the Vodkat League Division One at Bacup on Saturday.
With just two matches left to play, City still need two points to make sure of second place, which they hope will be enough to gain promotion.
They travel to league champions Trafford on Saturday, April 26, kick-off 3pm, and City’s recently postponed home game against Runcorn Linnets has been re-arranged for Monday, April 28, kick-off 7.45pm.
City’s season might well depend on the outcome of th Runcorn match so, hopefully, local supporters will turn out in good numbers at Moor Lane.
In bitingly cold and windy conditions, City started nervously against third from bottom Bacup on Saturday and they made little impact in the early stages.
Indeed, they had to rely on a tremendous one-handed save by keeper Martin Campbell from a well hit drive from Borough’s Brian Herbert before the home side nudged themselves in front after half-an-hour.
For a split second, the referee’s assistant seemed to be about to flag Borough’s Steve Stott offside but he seemingly changed his mind and Stott finished well past Campbell.
Salford’s reply eight minutes later from Lathan Forrester must rate as one of the goals of the season. Picking up the ball wide on the left, he cut inside and unleashed a right-footed pile driver from 30 yards out. The shot left home keeper Phil Melville grabbing fresh air.
Bacup reacted well to the equaliser and they had a goal disallowed for handball before the half-time whistle.
After the interval, City stepped up a few gears. Barry Massey had a strong shot deflected from close range and a corner from Mattie Burke almost caught Melville unaware as the keeper was forced to palm the ball on to the crossbar.
Burke then gave Salford the lead with 15 minutes remaining and, again, it was a classic score.
A great ball from Steve Cunningham put Burke in the clear to the left of the penalty box and, as Melville raced out of his goal, he chipped the ball with the outside of his foot over the keeper’s head and into the net.
At this point City looked to be in full control and Forrester just failed to get on the end of a through ball from Steve Brackenridge. But, with just five minutes left, disaster struck for Salford. City’s defence had enough chances to clear the ball out of the danger area before the home side’s Dominic Slavin placed a header past Campbell from amongst a ruck of players.
Should less emphasis be placed on the results of tests and more emphasis on general education for children?
