Salford City 1 Bacup Borough 0

A JON Robinson goal after 55 minutes proved to be enough for City to move four points clear of nearest challengers Newcastle Town for runners-up spot with just four games to play.

Lowly Bacup made Salford toil for the points at Moor Lane on Tuesday night.

Salford had started the match brightly but faded as the first half progressed.

Borough’s Davey Luker almost spoiled things for Salford with just five minutes remaining but City keeper Martin Campbell brought off an outstanding point blank save.

The Bacup win followed a tough 2-2 draw at Newcastle Town on Saturday.

City almost paid the penalty for a couple of contentious spot kick decisions by the match referee.

After just three minutes City attacker Jon Robinson, back defending a corner, appeared to be pushed forward into the ball but a penalty was awarded and dispatched by Simon Eldershaw.

They were back on level terms after 20 minutes when Tommy Turner was presented with a simple tap in.

Salford took the lead a minute into the second half through a powerful Robinson header.

Another controversial penalty gave Newcastle a share of the points as Eldershaw made no mistake once again from the spot.

City host Abbey Hey at Moor Lane on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.

The club’s youth team beat Avro on Sunday to book a place in the Manchester County Youth Cup final.
