Salford City 2 Nelson 1

A LATE Jon Robinson strike saw Salford City halt a disappointing run of results in the Vodkat League first division on Saturday.

But, prior to City’s away game with fifth-placed Flixton, which was being played as the Advertiser went to press last night, Wednesday, March 12, they were still eight points adrift of leaders Trafford having played a game more.

Nelson came into Saturday’s match at Moor Lane bottom of the table having won only three league games all season.

But an outstanding display from their goalkeeper Billy Carrington almost earned them a share of the spoils.

City were frustrated by Carrington at virtually every turn but they stuck to their task and were eventually rewarded.

Nelson took the lead against the run of play with their first attack on 10 minutes. A Kenny Tudor back pass wrong footed keeper Martin Campbell and Alex Mugan crossed for Gary Smith to head the ball into an empty net.

Mark Banyard almost caused further embarrassment to Salford when his long range shot rebounded off the post before he nearly scored an own goal at the other end.

City captain Sean Whitehead had a goal ruled out for off-side and Carrington made quality saves from Tommy Turner, Mattie Burke, Robinson, Tunje Moses and Lathan Forrester.

But City’s dominance finally bore fruit when Stephen Brackenridge finished emphatically on 50 minutes and when the hard working Robinson nipped in from an 86th minute corner to plant a firm header in at the near post.

City visit Glossop North End on Saturday, March 15, kick-off 3pm, and travel to Formby on Tuesday, March 18, kick-off 7.45pm.
