MONTON Amateurs will go into their Murray Shield semi-final at Chapel Town brimming with confidence after winning a local derby with Fives Athletic 5-1 on Saturday.

The result lifted Monton up to joint top of the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester Football League first division table.

They had to come from behind against second from bottom Fives, who netted via Rob Faiyaz following a goalkeeping error.

Tommy Walsh levelled the scores before half-time.

And Monton went on to dominate the second half, which was played amid heavy rain.

Dave Coffey went past five defenders to score a stunning solo effort. And the other goal scorers for Monton, who play their semi-final at Chapel Town this Saturday, March 15, were Nick Horton, Steve Kennedy and Rob Wrigley.

Irlam FC hit the Premier Division summit with a thumping 8-0 home win against second from bottom Breightmet United.

But they have played six games more than second-placed Gregorians.

Dave Butters scored a hat-trick of goals for Irlam, who led just 2-0 at half-time. The other players on the scoresheet were Adam Lucas, Ryan Hutchinson, Paul Lynch, Lee Cauldwell and James Holt.

Monton Amateurs’ reserve side rose to seventh spot in the second division table following a 3-1 victory at fifth-placed Walshaw reserves.

Irlam’s A side stayed second from bottom in the fourth division. They lost 7-1 at second-placed Hollinwood A with Elliot Mann bagging their consolation goal.

Mid-table Fives Athletic reserves edged out ninth-placed Pennington reserves 2-1.
