Salford City 2 Maine Road 3

POOR defending was to blame for Salford City failing to return to the top of the Vodkat first division on Saturday.

A lively Maine Road side edged the Ammies out in a North West Counties League battle at Moor Lane to leave a disappointed City team reflecting on their third successive defeat.

Danny Self opened the scoring for Maine Road in the 10th minute with a close range header and he doubled the score on the half-hour mark following a fine solo run.

Road’s Luke Mack made it 3-0 with just 35 minutes on the clock and City must have feared a real hammering at that stage.

Centre back Kenny Tudor pulled one back in the 45th minute with a well struck shot and Salford began to look more like the side that has topped the table for much of the season.

Salford’s confidence grew when they dragged themselves right back into the game with a goal almost from the restart. Jon Robinson broke through the visitors’ defence to finish well and reduce the home side’s arrears to 3-2.

City kept attacking Maine Road’s rearguard but, despite good efforts from Matty Burke and Robinson, they could not find a way through.

The result left the Ammies in third behind Trafford and Newcastle Town. But they were looking to regain top spot in a game at Nelson as the Advertiser went to press last night, Wednesday, February 27.

Attention then turns to title rivals Trafford’s visit to Moor Lane on Saturday, March 1, kick-off 3pm. The game will go a long way to deciding the destination of the championship trophy.
