FOUR second half goals took Salford one step closer to Wembley when they disposed of Northern League club Shildon in the FA Vase.

A clinical hat trick from Jon Robinson in front of Moor Lane's biggest crowd of the season helped set City up for a third round home tie against Sheffield-based Hallam in two weeks time.

The match started brightly for Salford when after five minutes Tunji Moses came in at the back post to power home a header from a Robinson right wing cross.

From the early stages City showed they were capable of knocking the ball about much better than their opponents and yet after a quarter of an hour they allowed Shildon back into the game with an easy goal.

The home defence failed to get a tackle in on visiting striker Adam Emson as he raced into the penalty box and, unchallenged, he slammed his shot past Andrew Robertson.

A lively few minutes before the interval almost saw Salford go in front.

Firstly a powerful header from Robinson went the wrong side of the upright and then Carl Lomax saw his excellent diving header dubiously disallowed for offside.

After the break however it was all Salford. After 50 minutes an alert Robinson took advantage of a poor back pass, took the ball around Shildon keeper Andrew Spence and guided it into the net.

On the hour mark Craig Buckley made things comfortable for Salford when his shot, in off the upright, gave the Moor Lane side a two goal cushion.

Two goals in three minutes from Robinson put the icing on the cake.

On 72 minutes he volleyed home a left wing Moses cross and then instinctively latched on to a loose ball in a crowded goalmouth to round off his hat trick.

It's back to League action for City on Saturday when they make the short trip to well placed Flixton, kick off is 3pm.
