SALFORD City marched through to the third round of the Vodkat League Cup with an emphatic display at first division rivals Bacup on Saturday.

City dominated the match from start to finish. And with Bacup seemingly deciding to defend in their own half from the kick-off, visiting keeper Andrew Robertson never had a save to make in the entire 90 minutes.

City went in front on the half-hour mark when Jon Robinson collected a pass from fellow striker Carl Lomax and placed the ball into the bottom corner of Bacup’s net.

The same two players combined again on 44 minutes as Robinson’s shot trickled over the goal line.

Robinson returned the favours on 70 minutes, winning possession before bursting into the box to set up Lomax for an easy finish. And Tommy Turner rounded off the scoring, foxing Bacup’s defenders with a great turn and guiding the ball home.

City would have won a lot more comfortably had it not been for a string of quality saves from Bacup’s keeper, most notably from two Mattie Burke pile-drivers.

Robinson had a header cleared off the line before spurning a glorious hat-trick chance while a Dean Thurston chip hit the crossbar.

City host Shildon from the Arngrove Northern League in the FA Carlsberg Vase second round on Saturday, November 17, kick-off 3pm. Admission costs between £5 and £2.
