Improving City only looking up

Salford City’s Unibond League First Division North fixtures this week produced two draws but a little more composure in front of goal could have seen the Ammies celebrating a couple of wins.

The level of performance has improved considerably over recent weeks however and City should soon be able to banish any lingering relegation worries.

A cup tie that promised much for Irlam at the start of the game, ended in extra-time misery, sending the visitors into the semi-finals inals of the Division One Trophy and leaving the home side wondering what went wrong writes Warren Dodd.

Irlam dominated early on and, in the eighth minute, Irlam forward Darren Green picked up a ball just outside of the Cheadle’s 18 yard line. With Cheadle’s defence expecting a ball into the box, Green outwitted them all with a sweet strike from the outside of his right foot, sending the ball looping over Cheadle’s keeper Mcdonnagh and into the back of the net.

Salford City put in two much improved performances this week, securing four points from entertaining games against Yorkshire opposition.

Those points take the Ammies up to 19th place in the 22-strong Unibond League First Division North, with a handy eight-point cushion now separating them from the relegation zone.

Salford City have parted company with manager Paul Wright after they became deeply embroiled in the UniBond League First Division North relegation battle following two home defeats against sides below them in the table.

Despite excellent performances in the FA Cup and FA Trophy league this season, results have been disappointing and the club now find themselves dropping towards the relegation zone - just four points clear of the bottom two spots.

The Academy takes place every Saturday morning at 11am-12pm. This is a free service provided to the Community of Swinton and Salford.

SCHOOLS SOCCER: Salford Under 14s are through to the Greater Manchester Schools’ Talbot Cup semi-final following a convincing 4-1 victory against Stockport at Broughton last Saturday.

The local lads were quick off the mark and they opened the scoring after just 11 minutes through Yanick Omari (Oasis).

Albert was most well known for being a member of the famous Busby Babes at Manchester United and for surviving the Munich Air Crash in 1958.

SALFORD Under 15s failed to make progress in the Northern Merit League when they narrowly lost 3-2 to South Ribble at Broughton last Saturday.

The first half was evenly contested but the visitors finally broke the deadlock on the half hour mark before Salford hit back to level the scores on the stroke of half-time through Brandon Zibake (All Hallows) to send the sides’ in all square at the break.

Lynn had notched an incredible 18 goals over their previous two matches, and started in a confident mood in front of a crowd of 889.
