TWO goals in each half helped Athletic to their most emphatic away win of the season as they ended the League One campaign in eighth place.

Neal Eardley (two), Deane Smalley and Gary McDonald all found the net against a woeful Crewe side who avoided the drop thanks to Bournemouth's draw at Carlisle United.

Smalley opened the scoring after five minutes, driving a shot past Ben Williams after Kenny Lunt presented him with the ball inside the Crewe penalty area.

Mark Crossley denied Nicky Maynard twice and Billy Jones at the other end before Eardley doubled Latics' advantage just after the half-hour.

Running onto Lewis Alessandra's pass, Eardley raced into the penalty area before firing past Williams and into the top corner.

The Welshman made it six goals for the season with the hour approaching, curling a delightful 25-yard effort beyond Williams.

It got even better for Athletic 10 minutes later when McDonald capped his final game for the club with a left-footed effort into Williams' left-hand corner.

With a calf injury forcing Crossley off, on-loan keeper Richard O'Donnell was unable to keep Crewe out as Steve Jones netted a consolation goal with six minutes left.

Williams denied Eardley a hat-trick by keeping out a late free kick as Athletic ended their season in the best possible manner
