No shame for Lee, Murray was mint

LEE Meager suffered a ‘derby’ demolition job as John Murray powered his way to the British lightweight title.
The Salford lion-heart was stopped in the fifth round as Murray won the first all-Manchester scrap for a Lonsdale Belt for 71 years.
Before the fight, pundits struggled to pick a winner - 23-year-old Murray had all the potential, but had shown signs of levelling out in his last couple of fights, while Meager had the experience of three previous British title fights.
But Murray soon recaptured the scintillating form which marked him out as the natural Mancunian successor to Ricky Hatton.
He was simply too big, too strong, too sharp, too accurate and too skilled for the courageous Meager, who shipped some dreadful punishment and still found the strength to protest at his stoppage.
Murray had all the hurt in his punches, while Meager’s body shots were having little effect.
By the fourth the Salfordian had a cut above the left eye and a nasty bruise and swelling under the right. In the fifth a stunning left uppercut and left hook saw the referee jump in to call it a day.
