‘Appeal is an option’

HEALTH Secretary Patricia Hewitt could be called upon in a bid to overturn the decision to close the baby unit.
Salford City Council leader John Merry says the authority could decide to write to the Secretary of State for Health to ask her to reconsider. Another option open is to seek a judicial review but this would prove costly - running into tens of thousands of pounds - and would mean starting the whole consultation process again.
Cllr Merry said: "While we're not ruling out the judicial review, the possibility of contacting the Secretary of State might be the better option. We're not going to use taxpayers' money on something that's not got a good prospect of success."
Cllr Merry said he was aware of the strength of feeling from Salfordians and said: "I share their anger and I did not make this decision but am going to try to fight it."
The authority is backed by Salford MP Hazel Blears who said: "I am extremely disappointed. I think the fact that Option A was the preferred option from the beginning has made it a very difficult process for us."
The council's campaign group will meet on Monday to decide what action to take.
