Well done our John!

9/11/2006

TODAY the Advertiser toasts John Wilkinson after his beloved Salford City Reds were given permission to build their new stadium.

The news a public inquiry ruled in favour of the 22,000 seater stadium is the culmination of years of hard work by a team of people dedicated to turning the dream into reality.

But it is, without doubt, the drive and vision of 'Mr Salford' which has kept the whole project moving forward when many would have given it up as a lost cause.

Mr Wilkinson and Adam Thomas, of Red City Developments, turned to the Advertiser in March, last year with fears a letter of concerns from Manchester City Council could have helped derail the scheme.

Your local paper gave its full backing to the Ave It! campaign and readers in their thousands gave their support too.

Today we pass on our congratulations to John, Adam and everyone else involved with this tremendous success.

The whole city from Irlam to Swinton is rightly proud of you all.

Salford should be proud - well done you have succeeded in getting a stadium built which will mean closure of the adjacent historic Barton Airport - shame on you!
