Mum’s anger over daughter’s arrest

A TEENAGE girl was arrested after allegedly making racist remarks to Asian students.

Codie Stott, 14, was arrested after refusing to take part in a science tutorial with five students at Harrop Fold High School because she claimed they didn't speak English.

After questioning by police she was released without charge but the school say they are still investigating the matter internally.

Her furious mother Nicola, 37, of Grosvenor Drive, Walkden has defended her daughter's stance.

She said: "Codie was not being racist. All that happened was that she was in a science lesson and the teacher split them up into discussion groups."

"Codie asked to be taken out of her group because the other five students were Asians and four didn't speak English so there was no point in her being with them.

"When she pointed this out to the teacher she was accused of being racist and told to go to the isolation unit.

"As she left the classroom she was stopped by a teacher patrolling the corridor and repeated her remark. He then made a complaint to the headteacher and the matter was referred to the community police officer based at the school.

"Codie was taken to the police station and kept in custody for over six hours while they questioned her.

"The reaction from the school and police is totally over the top and I am furious my daughter had to go through this trauma when all she was saying was common sense. I hope it ends here because Codie doesn't want to go back through her ordeal at the police station."

Harrop Fold head Dr Antony Edkins said: "An allegation of a serious nature was made concerning a racially motivated remark by one student towards a group of Asian students new to the school and new to this country.

"We aim to ensure a caring and tolerant attitude towards people and pupils of all ethnic backgrounds, and will not stand for racism in any form."

A police spokesperson confirmed that they had questioned Codie with regard to a Section Five Racial Public Order offence and that she had been kept in a juvenile unit, not a police cell.

"The unit is not particularly threatening, it has picture windows and comfy furniture and she would have been checked on regularly by trained staff.

"She was definitely not locked up for over six hours."

What on earth is this country coming to. I think the police and the school have acted apaulingly. What that poor girl must have been going through when in a police cell doesnt bear thinking about. What we need is a strong politician to get to grips with all this political correctness going daft. Some one like John Reid or evan Jack Straw. I hope the teacher who reported this and the police man/women who didnt throw this out as absurd can sleep at night. People like these make more problems than they solve.

This is so insane, I don't know where to begin. I shudder to think of this kind of Orwellian thought-police state taking root here, but it will.

Thought crimes are instituted by scoundrels and cowards.

Where is the common sense?

Arresting this child is abuse and a total outrage.

I doubt very much if a group of English kids went to Burma or Pakistan or Malawi, that a local kid there would want to be in their group either.

Enough of the white guilt. No one else gives a rip about anyone but their own tribe, why do we need to not only bend over grovel in the dirt in gratitude that we are even able to exist?

I do not believe that the treatment given to Codie was the correct procedure. I have been in teaching myself and have on occasion had students say things, which were not in order when it came to race issues. I always dealt with it myself and said to the student did their parents know they talked like that and would they like to know; the student always backed down. The main reason for this was that many teachers go over the top on racist and sexist issues. Anyway was Codie taken out of school with her mother's permission? It is ilegal to take achild out of school without parental consent.

(1) The Asian students should be there in the first place; they should remain in their own country.

(2) The Blair/Labour regime is a criminal, nation-wrecking entity. Blair should be tried and jailed and the Labour Party shoud be declared a criminal organization.

Well I am glad to see some brilliant coments from people all over the world. This is a disgrace what Codie went through. The teachers and Police should be totally ashamed they have taken it this far. Codie was 100 right on asking if she could be with another group. Let's face it the poor girl could not understand a word they spoke, it's not racist asking can she be put with a group of children she understands. Like one guy pointed out what a total waste of our tax payers money, and yes this still is our country, well what you can call our country. Because our government is letting us all down by keep accepting more foreigners into our country. Why can't we say "NO", enough is enough now we are English and all and sundry are walking all over us. Well done Codie there is nothing wrong with voicing your opinion and the teachers you have should be ashamed of what they put you through. Bet they would not of done it to there own son or daughters. Funny, I always thought that English was the national language of the UK. Silly me! Its Urdu!! What was I thinking? I'll tell you what Im thinking: Its a national disgrace what this girl was put through by these so-called "teachers". There're the ones who should be locked up if for no other reason than at best, they are a public nuisance,at worst they are a danger to society as a whole. Poliitical Correctness! Bull! Another catch-all phrase for ultra left wing liberals to hide behind while shoving their agenda down everyones throats. Its more like Poliitical Cowardness. Someone needs to stand up and say "Enough is enough" After all, whos country is it anyway?? Codie has my deepest respect for speaking out the way she did.

Seemingly lost in this debate is the issue of rule of law. Completely irrelevent are the questions of precisely what she said, or how she phrased it, or whether enough has been done to integrate the immigrants, or make them feel welcome and at home, or make them feel competent as speakers of English whether it is actually true or not.

The question is, "did the girl break any specific law that is actually written down?" Did she threaten their lives (assault) or something like that that we can understand as a real crime?

My guess is "no"; more likely she was arrested for breaking those unwritten laws about having politically-approved attitudes.

As someone who is mixed-race and whose half-Asian children are even more so, the wisdom of enforcing political attitudes with draconian policies is completely lost on me. This is called "fear" not "love" or even "respect".

My first thought was if the Asian pupils were not fluent in English what on earth were they doing in a science class? Science is complicated enough even when one's Mother tongue is English. Secondly I agree with the person who mailed this is PC going bananas. It remains to be seen what the actual comments were, but I do think in all moderation the young lady might have made an effort at least to communicate with the other students. Areprimand would have been enough. To call in the police was ludicrous!

I bet she made far worse remarks than is elluded to in this report, I remember how kids at school are. It was a little over the top to arrest her but perhaps it made her think twice about being racist. If the other kids genuinely couldn't speak English (which I doubt is the case) then perhaps I can see where she is coming from. However I think this story doesn't give enough of the details.

It's nice to know the police behave like Nazis when confronted with someone's rights. Does school have the right to make you associate iwht anyone they wish. If so, the school district should provide interpretors.

What on earth is going on.?The young girl in question has a equal right to education and if she could not understand what was being said in the group then it seems a perfectly reasonable request to change groups.Why is the racist card always played.? In this instance the teachers should hold responsibilty for a complete over (PC) reaction,they have caused this situation which in turn will cause resentment which will lead to us to an us and them situation.I beg the question,which incidentally I know the answer to, if the asian girl had said that she could not understand the english girls would that asian girl have been whisked down to the police station.Silly question really. Shame on the teachers who have disgracefully overreacted and created sitution.One way racism which is eroding the rights of the majority in order to not upset the minorities...wake up these policies are creating what you are so desperate to avoid.

The funny part is the Teacher probably doesn't realize what a complete idiot it is. Talk about blowing something up into what it isn't. I wouldn't want to be grouped in a project at work, with people who can't communicate with me. She did nothing wrong whatsoever, she's just surrounded by idiots. Shame on the teacher and the police. Too bad we now live in a rotten world where we are persecuted for speaking out and making a normal request.

I am in absolute shock at the lengths some petty minded individuals will go to in the realms of Racial protection. Where was the protection and rights of this 14 year old minor when she was taken from her liberty and questioned. If I were her parent I would be suing for wrongful imprisonment and using the Human Rights Act in her defence I assume that if you are white you have rights and the same rights would apply to us under the Human Rights Act too?

What is so wrong at saying she should not be in a group who could not speak english for a discussion or did the teacher want her to fail? Why are these children not segregated until fluent in english? This is all to the detriment of our children in the classroom who are inevitably being held back by situations such as these. I certainly would like to see the parent sue on behalf of her daughter. I am disgusted with the political correctness in the UK today.

The girl's original predicament was probably understandable if not enough had been done to integrate the students within that group. But then again we don't know enough details of the situation to be sure (sloppy reporting!)

But she must have said something that isn't being reported on by the Advertiser for her to be questioned under the public order. Something that I hope as a kid she's just picked up from someone else and she doesn't fully understand the implications of.

Maybe she doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt thou.

Not enough is done about integration for new arrivals in this country.

And as for 'free speech' Mr Bowers, this right has to be balanced against the rights of everyone to live in peace and with tolerance etc. Don't blow it up into something it isn't. It's not like we're living in some Orweillian nightmare quite yet!.

There IS something very racist going on here!, school proventing a white girl from part of her education because she pionts out something that any one with common sense would understand and educated Teachers should have realised at the time. This kind of nonsence must be put to an end once and for all, the British people as a whole are a very liberal and easy going lot, racists are a 'tiny minority' amongst us but its about time we stood up for our language culture and heritage in our country! We have bent over backwards for new arrivals in this country, with differing faiths and cultures and they show no respect or appreciation for it. The tide of opinion is changing
