Mother’s anger over out-of-date baby milk

A YOUNG mother says her baby son was made so ill he needed to see a doctor after drinking six week's out-of-date baby milk she unwittingly bought from Tescos.

Tracey Tinsley bought the milk at the store's garage shop on Liverpool Road, Irlam on Saturday, June 24 not realising the sell-by date was May 18, 2006.

She claims although the store gave her a full refund at no point have they offered an apology for their blunder.

Tracey said: "Brodie had an upset stomach that evening and was crying for most of the night. I had to take him to the doctor the next day but happily, he has now recovered.

"But I was still furious that the shop was selling products past their sell-by date - and baby products at that.

"When I went back to the store to complain they offered me a refund and a supply of new milk but no explanation and no apology.

"I was furious at the way they treated me and that's why I told them what they could do with their milk and walked out."

The 22-year-old, from Crossfield Road, Eccles said she bought the milk in a rush to get ready for her first night out since the birth.

She said: "I needed the milk because my mum was babysitting and she was going to feed him later.

"Later she rung me on my mobile and said he had an upset stomach and that she had looked at the milk carton and found its sell-by date was May 18, 2006.

"I was in a rush because I was going out for that evening for the first time since I had given birth to Brodie six weeks ago."

A spokesman for Tesco said: "We very much regret that Miss Tinsley was sold a carton of baby milk that was out of date and are taking steps to make sure that this situation does not re-occur.

"We would be glad if she would contact the store to see what can be done to make up for her distress."

This is the kind of thing that cannot happen to a breastfeeding mother who stays with her baby. And it is the kind of risk mothers take with their children, if they think they have to go out and leave a six week old baby to be formula fed by a baby sitter.

Hang on a minute. A six week old baby has an upset stomach and is crying all night?..... This is what babies do, love....spew and wail, I've got one just the same. I doubt that the milk is to blame for this 'unnatural' behaviour especially as it is only a few weeks out of date. Anyway, dates on products is for consumer information so maybe mum should have looked at the date first.
