Giggs gets in swing for Chris

MANCHESTER United legend Ryan Giggs was among the star names swinging into action for injured rugby player Chris McGuirk.

Giggsy, together with former England midfielder Peter Reid, and boxer Jamie Moore, picked up their clubs at a golf day at Swinton Park Golf Club as fundraisers neared their £200,000 target needed to build Chris a house suited to his disability needs.

Chris, 21, broke his neck and was paralysed from the neck down after an injury playing for De La Salle rugby union club in December, and his friends have dedicated their time to getting him home so he can leave Southport's spinal injuries unit where he has been receiving treatment.

The golf day was the latest in a number of events which have included a fun run, celebrity football game and a black tie dinner which have pushed the total to over £150,000.

Fundraiser John Camilleri said: "All the events have been a success and it never stops surprising us how much the people of Salford are prepared to give towards helping Chris. He really appreciates it and it has definitely spurred him on. Giggsy and Reidy have been great and so has everyone else who's got involved.

"We are currently in discussions with Salford Council about land and houses and in the mean time we are looking at putting Chris up in a rented flat so he can at least be near his friends and family in Salford."
