Samia signs up for our Hope petition

9/ 2/2006

CORRIE crimper Samia Smith has slammed plans to close the maternity unit at Hope Hospital.

The 23-year-old was joined by her mother Patsy Ghadie as the pair pledged their support to the Advertiser's Hands Off Our Hospital campaign.

Patsy, 55, gave birth to both her children at Hope - son Tariq in 1977, followed by Samia in 1982 - and described the care she received as "brilliant".

Samia, a former pupil at St Patrick's RC High School in Eccles, said: "I think it's disgusting that they're talking about closing the maternity at Hope because Salford needs it and it's such a good hospital.

"I don't think the hospital will be the same if they shut it. I think it's a ridiculous and crazy idea - why fix something that isn't broke? It's a good hospital with a good reputation and there's no need in my opinion for them to shut it."

Patsy added: "Hope has been very good to me - I had a mild heart attack two years ago and the care I got was unbelievable. I don't see why they want to change things."

I strongly urge people to go on line or print out and post the response forms to the Strategic Health Authority to change the decision about the closure of the maternity unit at Hope Hospital. Are people aware that if any other option is taken other than option C it would mean the loss to Salford of the midwifery led birth centre, the obstetric maternity unit, the neonatal unit and all gynaecologocal services?. Salford has an excellent regional neonatal intensive care unit and a neonatal outreach service (formerly known as community special care midwives) and we must encourage the citizens of Salford to respond and support it.
