Council planners agree stadium is 'critical' to Reds' development

28/11/2005

SALFORD Council's planning committee unanimously backed the new stadium.

After a three-hour meeting at Swinton Civic Centre the plans for a 20,000 capacity stadium with hotel, casino and retail space were passed and will now be considered by the north west office of the Deputy Prime Minister before work can begin at the Barton site.

Due to concerns raised by residents living nearby there will be over 50 conditions imposed to address issues like the amount of traffic.

Council leader John Merry, Reds' chairman John Wilkinson and Red City Developments managing director Adam Thomas spoke in favour of the move. Cllr Merry said: "We are very proud of the team and they contribute to the good name of Salford across the country. But the Super League is developing and developing fast and teams are expected to be playing in national, if not world class stadiums. In my view, this development is critical for the development of the city and the club."

Resident Steve Ramsbottom from Romiley Street said: "From the moment I was born in Hope Hospital in 1945 I have known Salford to be special. And growing up we had the best team in the country. I still believe this city is special and this stadium can ensure that we are special not just today but for 100 years to come."

Some residents, including Brenda Marsh, did not share the enthusiasm. She said: "Traffic in the area is intolerable now never mind when the stadium is built. You can't move in the area around Peel Green roundabout and Peel Green Road and I say to the councillors - you come and live where we live and then see what it's like."

Barton councillor Dave Jolly said: "I worry that if the casino does not go ahead due to no change in government policy then it might jeopardise funding. If there is a new road link opened up it will provide a 500m drag strip for trial bikers to use. I also think the parking exclusion zone needs to be larger so residents don't have cars parked outside their houses."

Adam Thomas said retail was necessary for the stadium and that a casino could be built under present gambling laws and then altered if the government changed the laws allowing 'super casinos'.

He also promised residents consultation would take place throughout the building process to see their concerns addressed.

The council's lead member for planning Derek Antrobus moved the motion and said: "There is no doubt this stadium has obvious benefits for the city of Salford in regeneration terms through employment and status. We do however need to make sure the residents in the area have their concerns over traffic dealt with and that is why there are numerous conditions attached."

It shows that the public gets ignored again without a public meeting for residents behind closed doors consultaion that was asked by me the independent for barton ward. But the fact is there was no date for this consultaion yet informed to me as a resident, the development traffic congestion environment would cause, but labour had this ndeal done ages ago thanks to our Labour Government blears.

I am a resident of Liverpool Road and have 2 young children. My daughter is 5 years old and suffers from asthma. We firmly believe this is caused by the volume of traffic and the fumes they create, we are unable to open our front windows because of polution and noise.

During last summer we spent alot of time in Blackpool along way from the constant traffic outside our door. During this time we noticed that her asthma was significantly better as she was away from the fumes from the traffic.

The road system was not built to take the amount of traffic it has at present (our house shakes when an articulated lorry passes) and I dread the thought of what it will be like and what the effect on my children's health will be if the statium goes ahead without new road systems to cope with the present traffic and the traffic that will be created by the development.

There are houses popping up for sale along Liverpool Road daily, it's turning into a mass exodus. (Rats leaving a sinking ship - that's how it feels)

Nobody seems to care how it will effect the people who will have to live with this....I agree with the lady who said come and live on our road and see the present level of traffic and see what you think then!!!
