Flames in hot wax for funds

THE Red Hot Flames sent male drivers' temperatures soaring when the bikini-clad bunch washed cars to raise cash to fund their bid to win the cheerleading world cup.

Three of the Salford Reds' cheerleading troupe turned out in beach wear at Bubbles Carwash on Eccles Road and managed to raise £35 each from a day of scrubbing and polishing.

Lynsey McLoughlin, 21, Emma Harris, 23, and Helen Reid, 20, were at the garage in a bid to raise money towards the £1,000 trip to Japan, where the contest will be held.

The girls got the idea for the bikini car wash from Hollywood cheerleading movie Bring It On, when they were sat round brainstorming ideas to take them to the Far East.

Emma Harris, who works for a reprographics firm, said: "We thought it would be an idea that would attract something different and it certainly did.

"It did get a little bit chilly at the carwash, but it was worth it, as everyone was very supportive, and a lot of guys told their friends and they came to get their cars washed too, which was great."

The girls are hoping they will raise enough money in time for the November competition, which will see the Flames, making up half of the UK squad that is up against 18 different countries, including Finland, Norway, Slovenia, Japan, America, and the UK.

The contest will be a fierce clash of cheerleaders with different styles and skills.

The UK will be competing in the dance section of the tournament and the Flames are expected to do well after coming second in the UK cheerleading champs in April.

The Flames are set to send even more temperatures through the roof, with the release of a new and revealing calendar in September.

The proceeds from the £4.99 calendars will go towards equipment and outfits.
