Manchester sets out case for the defence

28/ 4/2005

COUNCILLOR Neil Swannick, Executive Member for Planning and The Environment, Manchester City Council, said: "Claims that Manchester City Council is trying to thwart plans for a new stadium for Salford Reds Rugby League Club are wrong.

"Manchester City Council wrote to Salford City Council in July 2003 when the planning application for the proposed new stadium was first submitted raising issues around enabling retail development.

"Salford Reds are an established and important part of the local sporting scene and we would be delighted for them to be able to build a new home at Barton. Manchester is committed to working with Salford for the mutual benefit of both cities and the wider region. The suggestion that we have employed lobbyists to brief against our neighbour's plans is a complete fabrication and it would stretch the most imaginative mind's creativity."
