UNDAUNTED: Habibur Rahman with a judge at the cook off

TV ambition still flavour of the month

16/10/2003

THINGS were hotting up last week as Salford curry veteran fought to win the North West heat of the National Curry Chef finals.

Habibur Rahman, aged 37, from the Balti Chef, Swinton, won the Salford title in August and credits his secret spice recipes for taking the local crown. Although they weren't enough to see him through to the next round, Habibur remains undaunted in his quest to become a celebrity TV chef.

"I think I was unlucky this time. I did my best but perhaps the judges prefer something a little hotter than the medium to mild dishes I made. I still hope to get into TV in the future. It's only out for this year!" he said.

It took judges at Salford University half an hour to reach their verdict and present the winner, Farooq Ahmed form the Veenas Restaurant in Rochdale, with a trophy and certificate.

The cook off began at 1.30pm and competitors had only one hour to produce three dishes - a curry, a complimentary dish and a bread or rice dish. The Grand Final will be held at the NEC in Birmingham on November 26 as part of the BBC's Good Food Programme.
